- One more item moving over from “that other site”.
I have finally rounded up replacement seals for both the GSA and HPU! Thanks go to other spyder enthusiasts who did groundwork, found suppliers, provided research and tips that allowed me to complete this project. (Months of work!)
GSA kit - $85
HPU kit - $85
Both kits - $160
Shipping in continental US is usually about $8-$10 extra, and about $40 to other countries.
These kits are a collection of all the EPDM seals and o-rings needed to replace all the rubber wear parts inside the HPU and GSA, plus most of the static seals for set screws, sensors, etc. I include a small container of DOW MolyKote 111 assembly lube to help the new seals seat and assemble properly. The HPU kit includes the metal encased press-in motor shaft seal that frequently fails (a hard to source part!). The GSA kit includes a nice new dust cover for the clutch cable actuator bore.
The most common failure mode for SMT cars is:
1) the GSA seals leak, or HPU motor shaft seal leaks
2) the position sensors get drenched, or the pump motor quits running
3) your SMT system goes nuts
4) you come to MR2 - Spyder.com looking for help
Two teflon piston seals in the GSA are NOT INCLUDED, but I haven't seen any failures due to wear on these two parts.
I have written a pdf file describing how to remove the GSA from the car. Lots of pictures included.
I have also written pdf files describing how to disassemble the HPU and GSA, with lots of pictures.
I am happy to forward all these pdf files to anyone for the asking. Send me your email address and I’ll attach the files and mail back to you. As soon as I get caught up, I want to add the content of the PDFs to the DIY section of this forum. Soon...

ch, I applaud your efforts in this endeavor(along with the SMT-ers who've contributed)! You are the Cap of the SMT!!!
"Think as we think", say many Spyder owners, "or you are abominably wicked, you are a toad". After I'd thought about, I said "I will then, be a toad."
Thank you, Stephen Crane
Dear Cyclehead. I'm having the same problems in Belgium with my SMT 2004. Wondering if I could purchage the seals and get my HPU fixed later this year when I go back home after my US assignment ? I already bought a Britisch RHD manual gear and brought it back to Belgium last year , but did not started yet on the rebuild . I could not find seals in Europe , of the German LUK pump set , so that's why I made this decition .Looks like with new seals the problem can be solved instead of braking the car apart . Actually I loved driving this car with the SMT gearbox a lot , so want to give it a last try ....Thanks
I’ll be glad to ship seals to you. Mostly the seals fix leaks. Solenoid orings can leak “internally” and keep the system from Shifting gears properly. Send me an email and I can attach the overhaul instructions.

apparently the system does not allow me to send a personal mail/message? What do I wrong...
Do you have anymore seal kits left? Feel free to email me at dwag8686@gmail.com
Replied. And sent a copy of SMT system seal replacement instructions.

Hi Frank,
I have seals for sale. I assemble the kits from orings and seals that buy from manufacturers. I have some of the seals custom manufactured for me since they are not available “off the shelf”.

@cyclehead OK. I would like to buy a set for HPU. How do we arrange the trade.
