If you saw my other thread about WTB a bumper, I am looking for one. And someone else was looking for a frunk latch the other day.
There's an entire red car for sale for a reasonable price near me. Here comes the ridiculous part. Should I buy the car for the bumper? And part out the rest?
Or to be even more ridiculous, all of us buy it collectively and we can source it for parts over the years whenever the need arises. Kinda like a timeshare but carshare? Not sure how the accounting would work. For example, I want the bumper so I pay a predetermined amount to everyone who goes in on the carshare?
Our car is rare. Parts are not easy to come by. It sucks spending weeks/months hunting down something. It will be nice to know there's something in inventory.
Of course, doesn't have to be this car and we would need someone to store it plus other logistics I am probably forgetting.
Edit: I guess it's more insurance than timeshare.
Edit2: Or we collectively donate spare parts into an inventory. For example, I have an OEM header that I just replaced with pre cats in perfect condition. I am gonna keep it for half a year to make sure my replacement works out. After that, I am happy to donate it into inventory in case anyone needs one at some point.
I don't think that is a bad idea at all. I'd be interested in chipping in to buy some parts at a group rate. I have a rear bumper in storage, but I'd like to pick-up a post-facelift bumper for future use, since they ain't making these parts no more, no more. Who would store the car whilst it is being picked over? I am sure there are other parts I would want, but that would be a good start for me.

Yea, the logistics could be a nightmare. I don't have a garage/barn/etc so you don't want me to store it but I am happy to chip in a storage fee for whoever can. Besides that, we need to arrive at a price for all the parts beforehand which in itself could be very time consuming. And from that derive the "insurance" premium spread among those interested.
And your last point is spot on. I am only shopping for a bumper right now but I know that in the years to come, I will need more parts. And they are going to be harder and harder to come by.
I am actually considering buying that car just for this purpose even if no one wants in. I mean, I own 12+ pairs of shoes. About 8 of which are over 10 years old but look and feel like new because the advantage of owning so many pairs is I rotate them. Theoretically, if I have two cars, they will last twice as long. Obviously, it's easier when shoes are $100 each versus $10k for a car. But imagine having 10 spyders. They will outlast me!

Haha, and here I am trying to convince myself to get a third pair of sandals! One time I drove to LA to buy a part, took my Spyder. Next thing I knew I was driving home with a front bumper sticking out of my cab. Don't give up hope yet on finding your rear bumper, I would say to try phacecrooks group but then I'd be a hypocrite. Maybe buy an aftermarket rear bumper? Stock styling is important to me... might not work for you. Some folks would say not to cannibalize another car, others would say cannibalize a SMT car and other audience would say do what you want with your money.

It feels wrong until you reap the benefits. I was hesitant at first too but when you realize you may never have to throw out a shoe, it makes it much easier. It becomes an investment.
Oh yea, I know I can find a bumper eventually. But that's the point of insurance right? It's to make life easier when life happens. To have access to convenience when you need it.
I am not against aftermarket bumper except for cost because I will have to paint it and it still might not match.
It's not so much cannibalizing a car but an organ transplant to save another. But the SMT brings up a good point. In theory, we would need to store a manual and a SMT assuming any SMT owners are interested.

My new pick up line!
Talk to phats, he has a whole stable of cars that I assume he plans to fix some of them and cannibalize others.
Trying to make a parts car co-op work would be very difficult due to everyone's changing needs for parts, storage space for the car, pulling of the needed parts, and shipping said parts.
It would be much easier to just part out a car.

So lets see some details on the car !!
All this says is that you love this car as much as the rest of us and you are looking to make the experience last forever. I think we can all relate. But that is the very reason not to volunteer a living Spyder to be a donor.
TRUE

Are you crazy ? You can't pay $4500 and part it out , that car is not worth $4500 on it's best day . You can part a car out and get about $1500 unless your lucky and can sell some of the bigger items that aren't feasible to ship to locals . The engine and trans are probably about ready to crap out , the top is ripped and so on ........

Really? How are you pricing the parts? I would think engine+trans alone would be $1500.
