Has anyone considered a FA20 swap from Subaru?
It's a RWD engine and trans with pretty poor packaging. Not gonna be easy (or possible) to fit.

The FA20 isn't a bad engine but it isn't great either in my opinion. There's easily better, cheaper, easier options for the spyder.
2zz seems to be the best option. What are others? K20? 2GR?
Would be pretty hard to fit. Then you have to find a transmission as well. I had a WRX with one, it was okay. I rather have a 2GR.
Yea, fit seems to be an issue. It intrigued me because apparently we can use a Subaru alternator pulley and that got me looking into Subaru parts. The WRX is much heavier than the MR2 so it loses the fun due to power/weight ratio. I am guessing a 2zz in a WRX is probably also meh for same reason. I feel the 2GR is too big. 2 liters is the perfect size.

You could always stroke the 2zz. Seems every fun car I own is 2.0L. I liked the WRX but I was not in love with the car. My Alfa and MR2s I can't seem to part with.

The 2ZZ is the 'easy button' as far as engine swaps into the spyder, or engine swaps in general go. It gives a good boost in power, is easy to do and isn't that expensive.
The K series is a bit more costly and requires beating/cutting depending on engine and intake manifold choice, the wiring is a bit more involved. You can make more power easier than a 2zz and the aftermarket is vast.
The 2GR requires cutting no matter what to at least the rear crossmember and is a bit more involved as I don't think anyone has made off the shelf mounts or such, plus wiring is even more involved.
There's a couple members going with the 2AR and it seems like a promising swap and is gaining quite a bit of traction as well.
My experiences have been with 2zz swaps and slowly doing a k swap on one of my spyders now.
The 2ZZ was a pretty straightforward swap, but if I ever swap another Spyder the K24A2 is my first choice.
A 2ZZ with a good exhaust set up matched with weight reduction makes the car a good fit and value. Too much weight and the car doesn't respond as well.
Not an FA20 but EJ20
I like the way that car's engine speed goes from 3,000 RPM to "ridiculous" in 0.001 seconds...
