I test my subwoofers using pink noise and a flat mic. I go through a painful process of delaying the main speakers or change the phase so I do not cancel out frequencies or having to use a parametric and kill the peaks.

A good test of subwoofers is Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture right about where the cannons come in.
